Curriculum

We believe in the concept of lifelong learning and that both adults and children learn things every day. We maintain that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone and, most importantly it should be fun, helping us to give children secure foundations on which future learning can be built. The Early Years Foundation Stage is about developing key learning skills i.e. concentrating, listening, co-operation and early communication, physical, literacy and numeracy skills. Children are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities every day. Our motto is: ‘There is no such thing as unsuitable weather, only unsuitable clothing’. There are seven areas of learning and development, which are divided into Prime and Specific areas.

Prime areas – 22 to 36 mths

  • Personal, Social and Emotional
  • Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific areas – 36 mths to 5 yrs

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

'There is no such thing as unsuitable weather, only unsuitable clothing.'

There are two types of play:

Child Initiated Play (CIP)

For part of the session each day children will choose how they play with the resources and toys available. The play resources are carefully chosen to develop children's skills in the seven areas of learning in the Foundation Stage. Children participate in CIP both indoors and outdoors. During this time practitioners observe and record children's learning through play and use their expertise to develop children's ideas and encourage social skills.

Adult led/directed play

Practitioners set up and lead an activity designed to fulfil certain learning objectives and develop particular skills. The curriculum for the Foundation Stage is organised into seven areas of learning and will be used to underpin all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing the children.

'The exceptional play opportunities, coupled with highly skilled staff, completely engage children in deep levels of learning.  Staff show and exceptional knowledge of child development and demonstrate expertise in their teaching. '
